Hi, everyone. I’m back with some more Pack 1, Pick 2!

Scenario #1

First Pick: Twin Bolt

The Pack:

My Pick:

Zurgo Bellstriker.

Zurgo is probably the best card in the pack, and also red, which is conveniently the color of your first pick. Zurgo lends itself well to aggressive decks, naturally, and good 1-drops are particularly hard to come by in this format. I would happily take Zurgo here and try to draft an aggressive red deck, with a preference for black/red dash. The next best cards in the pack are probably Palace Familiar and Hardened Berserker, but neither is really a consideration here.

Scenario #2

First Pick: Epic Confrontation

The Pack:

My Pick:

Flatten.

Flatten is the best card in this pack by so much that it’s a relatively easy pick. I find this to be a common trend with green in this set. Often you’re passed a pack with no rare, leaving all of the top commons in the pack. The with first-picking a green card is that, aside from Epic Confrontation, the top commons of the other colors tend to be so much better than all the green commons, that you end up dipping into a second color more quickly with green than you might with some of the other colors. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially when you’re getting to pick up a card like Flatten with your second pick, but it’s certainly worth noticing.

Scenario #3

First Pick: Deathmist Raptor

The Pack:

My Pick:

Atarka Beastbreaker.

Well, I guess this is the opposite of what I just said above. The best card in the pack is Twin Bolt. Atarka Beastbreaker is quite good, but really the reason to make this pick is because of the insane power of Deathmist Raptor. That card is a real bomb in a green deck, and you want to do everything in your power to make sure it makes your deck. It is worth nothing that playing Deathmist Raptor in a deck without green, but some morphs, is still very good, but it really doesn’t compare to casting it face up on turn three with the ability to return it later in the game.

Scenario #4

First Pick: Pacifism

The Pack:

My Pick:

Sandcrafter Mage.

This is a pretty unexciting pack. Sandcrafter Mage is one of, if not the best card, and it’s in the same color as first-pick Pacifism. There’s really nothing else worth considering, in my opinion, so I’d just take the Sandcrafter Mage.

Scenario #5

First Pick: Dromoka’s Command

The Pack:

My Pick:

Ultimate Price.

This is probably one of the closer picks that I’ve had in this series. The first pick is a great card in Dromoka’s Command, and of course, it’s both white and green. I’m inclined to try to stay in one of those colors to increase my chance of playing the Command. The best white or green card in the pack is Enduring Victory, which is a good card. Ultimate Price, though, is bonkers. Ultimate Price is so much better than Enduring Victory that I think I’d lean toward taking it here, and effectively concede that I’m not going to play one of my first two picks, unless I end up splashing or something. I am not 100% certain on this one, and I can definitely see an argument for taking the Enduring Victory, but my instinct is that you’re giving up too much power by passing it.

I hope you guys enjoyed this edition of Pack 1, Pick 2. Anything you disagreed with this time around? I’m also curious, specifically, how people feel about the Ultimate Price vs. Enduring Victory pick. Let me know in the comments!
