We’re used to see double-faced cards as creatures, but R&D shook flipped the script again and we now have to deal with a land that can turn into a powerful Demon!
Let’s take a look at Westvale Abbey!
For those unfamiliar with Italian, I’ll translate:
Tap: Add 1 mana colorless.
5 Tap, Pay 1 Life: Put a 1/1 white and black Human Cleric token onto the battlefield.
5 Tap, Sacrifice 5 creatures: Transform Westvale Abbey and untap it.
Ormendahl, Profane Prince
Flying, lifelink, indestructible, haste
This land has a lot of potential, especially in this Standard with plenty of token makers.
As you can see there are plenty of creatures that create Thopters and Eldrazi Scions. The departure of Hordeling Outburst will hurt Atarka Red—Dragon Fodder can’t carry the archetype.
All these token makers make it possible to cheat on number of creatures so you can flip this land up as soon as possible.
Adding 1 mana colorless mana used to be a downside, but ever since Oath of the Gatewatch brought cards like Thought-Knot Seer and Reality Smasher into the mix, you need to have lands that produce colorless mana.
Indestructible wasn’t so impressive with Crackling Doom, Abzan Charm, and Utter End around, but now that those are out the door, Ormendhal could be very problematic to deal with. Of course we need to be aware of Reflector Mage, who’s ready to bounce your Prince and make your efforts worthless.
UR Abbey Eldrazi
Ghostfire Blade is definitely a big loss for Eldrazi in Standard, but decks are losing their powerful cards overall—mostly good removal spells.
We don’t have to Roast Rhinoceros any more, but I still think we will need such an efficient removal spell for dealing with Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet and Sylvan Advocate. Another option as removal spell is Outnumber—if we choose to go more token based, I can see it being better than Roast.
I’m not confident this is an optimal deck list. On the one hand I wanted to go on the token-maker plan with Thopters, Eldrazi Scions, Vile Aggregate, and on the other hand I wanted to go big with Herald of Kozilek helping ramp into Drowner of Hope and Reality Smasher.
Hence, I built a hybrid to show you all possible directions to go with it.
I’m not running the full set of Abbeys because you are still playing 2 colors that you need to fix, and also because you aren’t fully going for the token plan.
Westvale Abbey has potential—it’s definitely better against slow decks, so its strength will depend a lot on how metagame shapes up. If control takes over, this land could become exceedingly popular.
