Netflix to Produce Magic: the Gathering Movie with “Endgame” Directors

We’re in the endgame now.

At least with the Russo brothers, that is. It was revealed today that the famed directors of The Avengers: Endgame blockbuster have agreed with Netflix to produce a show based around Magic: The Gathering. It’s a momentous announcement for Wizards of the Coast (and parent company Hasbro), especially after a previously announced feature film never materialized.

With Joe and Anthony Russo on board as executive producers, Netflix and Wizards of the Coast have found a pair well-used to bringing much-loved lore to the masses. The success of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame set a new standard for what is possible with ensemble superhero movies, and it’s an approach that should translate well into the rich backstory offered by Magic.

“We have been huge fans and players of Magic: The Gathering for as long as it has been around, so being able to help bring these stories to life through animation is a true passion project for us,” Joe and Anthony Russo said in the announcement.

It will be the first project of this scope for Magic, the 25-year-old first and original trading card game. The game has surged in the public consciousness recently with the release of MTG Arenaa digital version of the game that has transformed the professional and online gaming landscape.

“More fans are enjoying Magic now than at any time in its 25-year history thanks to the enduring popularity of the tabletop game and our latest release War of the Spark, as well as the incredible success of our new digital game, Magic: The Gathering Arena,” Chris Cocks, President of Wizards of the Coast, said. “We’re thrilled to collaborate with Joe and Anthony Russo to bring Magic: The Gathering’s rich and diverse cast of characters and worlds to Netflix in a way that will delight our many fans and those new to the franchise.”
