Mono-White Eldrazi in Standard

I was all set to talk about Tomoharu Saito’s UR Flyers list this week, but Eric Froehlich beat me to it! If you haven’t seen the list or checked out his article, I suggest you do so. It’s one of the more unique Standard decks in quite some time.

That being the case, I decided to default to my old standby: white cards and Eldrazi. To be fair, while I do focus on Eldrazi strategies a good deal, this is only the second time I’ve talked about a list containing white cards. At least, I think it is…

While I can’t say exactly where this list originated, the version I’m looking at today was played to a 5-0 finish in a Magic Online League by user Arianne. Although, upon further investigation, it looks like some version of the deck has been floating around since about May 12th. Take a look:

White Eldrazi

With so many Human-based decks in Standard right now, this deck is a breath of fresh air, despite still being—you know, white, like every other deck in Standard currently. Matter Reshaper, Thought-Knot Seer, and Reality Smasher are some of the most powerful creatures you can be playing at those points on the curve.

Along with getting some of the best removal in Standard right now—Spatial Contortion and Declaration in Stone—this deck also has some of the best synergies you can be taking advantage of, such as the Secure the Wastes-into-untapping-and-activating-Westvale Abbey combo.

One thing that’s interesting is that while you don’t have too many creatures to “combo” with Eldrazi Displacer, the ones you do have are pretty good. For example, flipping an Archangel Avacyn back over to give your creatures indestructible on demand is a pretty big game. Even if your opponents manage to trigger her transformation and she’s about to deal 3 damage to all of your creatures, you can simply respond by flipping her back over and granting indestructible again. With enough mana, this can be back-breaking.

The other two uses are blinking Thought-Knot Seer, which has the potential to lock an opponent out of the game, and blinking Knight of the White Orchid, which can ramp you if you ever fall behind on lands. At a later point in the game, you can blink your Knight multiple times before the first trigger resolves, netting you several lands, even if your opponent is only ahead by a single land. You can also flip back over and reset a Westvale Abbey if your Ormendahl is about to be exiled.

It’s a weird world where you find yourself running 4 Battlefield Forge and 4 Caves of Koilos simply to cast your Eldrazi without a red or black card as far as the eye can see. You also have access to 4 Hedron Crawler, giving you 6 total cards that allow you to ramp to 4 or 5 mana. This is nice because that’s where your Gideon, Ally of Zendikar, Thought-Knot Seer, Reality Smasher, and Archangel Avacyn live. Of course, 4 Gideon in a deck with all these Eldrazi is a little suspect from a flavor perspective, but I don’t know anything about that.

Keep in mind that the deck contains only 4 commons and 5 uncommons—the rest of the cards are rares or mythics. A budget deck this is not, but it looks like it could be decent against the current field. The 1 Tragic Arrogance also does a great impression of a sweeper for things like the Rites decks or other aggressive decks.

I assume the sideboard is customized to beat whatever threats the pilot expected to face and, as such, you should do the same if you plan on trying this list out. I might do the same in some upcoming videos, so keep your eyes peeled. Thanks for reading and I’ll catch you guys later.
