It’s a Calamity!

YUM! The entire world looks quite tasty if you’re a massive 9/9 Elder Dinosaur. Zacama over here is looking like a snack with all of the powerful and sweet activated abilities at its disposal. So now that we’re all excited for Zacama, the question becomes: how we go about building the best Zacama, Primal Calamity Commander deck? Dinosaur tribal sounds like an uproar, but I think Gishath, Sun’s Avatar does a better job in that role. Since Zacama seems to be at the top of the food chain in Ixalan, I think Food Chain becomes the most appropriate card to build around.

First, we need to understand how Food Chain works. Food Chain is an incredibly powerful, top-tier green card in EDH (and sometimes Legacy too!). Whether you play tier 1 competitive decks or more casually, there is no denying the power of Food Chain. The instant wins it can provide are totally off the chain. For example, in decks like General Tazri, Food Chain combines with either Misthollow Griffin or Eternal Scourge to give you infinite mana. With said infinite mana you cast your general, Tazri, search up a Kalastria Healer, and then recast Tazri over and over until everyone is #ded. Prossh, Skyraider of Kher combined with Food Chain gives you infinite 0/1 Kobolds that can either be used to pump your general or in tandem with Purphoros, God of the Forge/Impact Tremors to kill the entire table. Seriously fun times. More casually, Maelstrom Wanderer and Derevi, Empyrial Tactician can also do all sorts of shenanigans with this powerful enchantment.

So what does Zacama let you do? Well, for starters, you will instantly have access to infinite mana when Zacama takes her rightful title at the top of the Food Chain. Even luckier for you, Zacama comes equipped with a slew of sweet activated abilities to dominate the board once you have achieved infinite mana. You can destroy any and all problematic artifacts and enchantments that may be encumbering you, destroy any creatures in play you wish, and gain infinite life.

Clearly, this is about as powerful as it gets with Zacama and this makes Food Chain an excellent and fun build around. There are many different ways to search up your powerful enchantment, so you should aim to find it by including tutors. As for casting the big Dino itself, you need lots of mana ramp. Accelerating your mana in EDH can be done in various ways—mana Elves, mana rocks, and land tutoring. Since Zacama plays so nicely with lands, I prefer land-based acceleration to mana rocks/dorks.

General: Zacama, Primal Calamity

While constructing this deck, all the sweet enchantment tutors had me brewing other possible uses for Zacama. What about an enchantress-style Commander deck with this monster at the helm? Enchantress generals should either do something sweet with enchantments (duh!) or provide an effect that can be useful to a long, drawn-out game plan. All this, while at the very least being in the colors green and white. Captain Sisay is great because she can tutor up Paradox Engine and Serra’s Sanctum, Marath, Will of the Wild is in good colors and provides a great use for extra mana, and Angus Mackenzie allows you to fog on problematic turns and works well with Ghostly Prison effects.

Zacama is a great top-end win condition once you have assembled enchantment locks and Naya colors are a great place to be for all the best enchantment synergies. Providing a mana sink as well as synergy with mana doublers make this general a force to be reckoned with.

I can’t wait to throw these decks together and give them a spin with some friends around the EDH table. How do you like the spotlights for new generals? Is it something you’d like to see more of in the future? What are your favorite ways to build Zacama? Let me know in the comments. Thanks so much for reading and until next time, may you always be at the top of the Food Chain.
