For a white Eldrazi deck, the big additions out of Hour of Devastation may not be obvious on the surface, but the utility lands that can produce colorless mana are surprisingly valuable. You’ll need colorless to cast the best Eldrazi, and now you can add Shefet Dunes to pump the team or Scavenger Grounds to mess up different graveyard-based strategies for a revitalized archetype.
Scavenger Grounds is a game-changer. Decks ranging from Mono-Red to U/W Gift play eternalize creatures, while delirium strategies, Torrential Gearhulk decks, and God-Pharaoh’s Gift rely on the graveyard. Throw in aftermath spells, and even one activation of a Scavenger Grounds can foil their plans.
Thought-Knot Seer is as strong as ever. It’s a Modern staple only held back in Standard by a difficult mana cost. Colorless mana is not easy to come by, but the Deserts have changed all that. A 4/4 body for 4 is already excellent and towers over much of the aggro strategies, while removing the best card from your opponent’s hand.
Matter Reshaper is pure value that is only contained by the prevalence of Incendiary Flow and Cast Out. A 3/2 creature for 3 is well priced, but the card advantage makes this a great creature to trade in combat or for removal spells.
Archangel Avacyn is just too powerful not to see more play in Standard. This thing has crushed me time after time playing red, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see players move in this direction. Archangel Avacyn is insane against creatures like Earthshaker Khenra and Ahn-Crop Crasher that make non-flash creatures unable to block, and this Angel plays both offense and defense.
Selfless Spirit and Walking Ballista both come down early and can flip Archangel Avacyn in a pinch. Spirit provides a nice clock against any opponent as 2 power in the air for 2 mana is a great rate. Ballista without Archangel Avacyn or any other token synergies would be a pretty average card, but the power to kill multiple creatures against red is key.
Thraben Inspector is great against red as well. It trades with many of their creatures while holding off potential Village Messengers and Bomat Couriers. Trading for a Falkenrath Gorger means saving a bunch of life while getting a Clue out of the exchange.
Eldrazi Displacer is nicely sized and can really slow down an early rush. This is a great tool to be able to kill opposing Ballistas and remove counters from creatures in Constrictor decks. Displacer also turns 3 mana into killing any token, which can be invaluable against Nissa, Gideon, or Zombie producers like Cryptbreaker, Dark Salvation, Diregraf Colossus, and Liliana’s Mastery.
Glory-Bound Initiate provides another early threat and some big life gain. It also combos well with something like Displacer to turn off the exert and untap it for more damage.
There’s plenty of solid removal in white. Declaration in Stone is going way up in value with the presence of large creatures, tokens, and Gods. Cast Out and Stasis Snare bring even more ways to exile threats on the other side of the battlefield.
Skysovereign, Consul Flagship headlines a selection of awesome Vehicles in Standard. A true weapon against black-based strategies that can’t use Grasp or Push on the big boat, it can win the game with anything to crew it.
Gideon, Ally of Zendikar isn’t at its best in this deck, but he can still just win the game. He’ll create a token every turn or an emblem to pump your team, while Shefet Dunes gives you even more value for going wide. With some Spawning Beds in your land suite to further go wide, you have some nice synergies here.
The Eldrazi are some of the best creatures in Magic, so having the right lands to really maximize their value is the biggest requirement to making a great deck.
