RG Landfall has seen some serious success here and there. It’s a powerful deck with a powerful aggressive strategy.
Scythe Leopard and Makindi Sliderunner turn all of your fetchlands into miniature Giant Growths. Alongside Monastery Swiftspear and Abbot of Keral Keep, you have an entire suite of creatures that come out early and hit hard.
With the combo of Temur Battle Rage and Become Immense, a single creature can get the job done. Titan’s Strength acts as a mini-Become Immense that also helps fuel delve and scrys to find missing pieces. It’s easy to trigger prowess and is usually a great hit off of Abbot of Keral Keep. Atarka’s Command isn’t as strong here as in decks that can go wider, but it represents tons of damage and this is one of the few decks that can abuse the rarely used function of putting a land into play at instant speed.
Den Protector brings the deck together by recurring a fetchland, a dispatched creature, or a critical pump spell, all while having evasion of its own (seriously enhanced by the pump).
After sideboard, things change. People can bring in cheap interaction to deal with quick creatures and go extra hard to prevent the combo. Cards like Dispel can break up a Temur Battle Rage and Radiant Flames or Fiery Impulse can stop the early beatdown.
But what if you go big after sideboard?
RB Dragons has been tearing up Standard lately, and a transformational sideboard into something resembling the Dragon deck is so crazy it just might work.
With so many fetchlands, playing a single Smoldering Marsh can turn on access to Kolaghan, the Storm’s Fury. Thunderbreak Regent is already an awesome creature with no help that is only aided when people are mis-sideboarding against what you’re bringing to the table.
With some additional flying creatures to go over the top and access to a card as powerful as Draconic Roar, a pseudo-Dragons deck can get there. Even without catching anyone off-guard, the spells are powerful enough to work anyway. The surprise factor is just a sweet bonus!
If your RG Landfall opponent reaches for their sideboard and brings in all 15, it could mean that you’re about to face Dragons or that you’re getting pump-faked! Let the mind games begin…
