At this point, we are all familiar with Esper Tokens. It’s a BW deck focused on Hangarback Walker, Wingmate Roc, Sorin, Gideon, and Secure the Wastes with some sideboard blue cards—But what about actual Esper Tokens?
Blue is not really known for its token makers, so it’s no real surprise that I haven’t seen many blue-based Esper Token strategies. Right off the bat, we get access to Jace, Vryn’s Prodigy, which just happens to be the most powerful card in Standard. That’s not a bad place to start. But what about the most powerful common in Battle for Zendikar draft?
Yeah, I’m talking about Eldrazi Skyspawner.
The little 2/1 flier actually has some pretty nice synergies in this strategy. The obvious interaction is with Gideon, Ally of Zendikar when you are making 2 creatures, but you’re also getting an evasive attacker in addition to acceleration to 5 mana. Conveniently, this is exactly the number you need to deploy a Wingmate Roc one turn earlier than most, one of the most powerful cards in today’s metagame.
The rest of the deck is filled with cards that make Esper Tokens (the BW version) such a powerful deck. Can the additions of Jace and Eldrazi Skyspawner be what Tokens needs to become the best deck in Standard, at the cost of making the mana a little bit rougher?
