Mardu Vehicles is impressive, but consistent mana is a one of the most desirable features of historic aggro decks. Today’s deck offers the punishing Vehicles core along with a more stable two-color mana base.
The 1-drops are the reason Mardu plays white. Toolcraft Exemplar is the most aggressively costed creature in the format, and Thraben Inspector offers value attached to an artifact. That said, Inspector doesn’t crew your bigger Vehicles and there aren’t a ton of ways to pump them, so it’s not necessarily the strongest card.
Inventor’s Apprentice is not as powerful as Toolcraft Exemplar , strictly speaking—a 2-power attacker is smaller than a 3-power one. It is, however, a much better card against Walking Ballista and Liliana, the Last Hope, as both really punish the Exemplar’s 1-toughness.
Bomat Courier isn’t the same guaranteed value as Thraben Inspector, but it’s a 1-mana artifact that will often be better than a single card. You have to keep attacking, and it’s a weaker draw in the late game, but it can always replace itself in an empty hand.
Speaking of crewing Heart of Kiran and making artifact creatures better, I love Weldfast Engineer. This thing clocks hard and is the perfect followup to the big flying boat. A turn-1 Apprentice into turn-2 Heart into turn-3 Engineer deals 10 damage by turn 3. That’s just nuts for a deck with plenty of other aggressive creatures and some of the best removal in the format.
Unlicensed Disintegration clears large creatures out of the way and gets value nearly every time. In a straight 2-color deck with tons of artifacts, you’re building the perfect Disintegration deck.
Pia Nalaar can make extra use of these artifacts by stopping blocks or pumping them up. All of her abilities are useful, and Pia plus her Thopter can crew a Heart immediately.
This is a Vehicle deck, and Heart of Kiran is the best of them. The 1-drops don’t crew well, but everything else in the deck will get the job done. Heart hits hard, and Weldfast Engineer amplifies the damage. For a deck looking to pack a punch and with lots of ways to pump up artifacts, Fleetwheel Cruiser fits perfectly. A 7/3 trample creature threatens to practically put the game away with 1 hit, and cards like Unlicensed Disintegration will only be extra punishing.
Heart of Kiran is a big boat, but there’s an even bigger one to rule the skies. Skysovereign, Consul Flagship is a massive threat against all of the creatures currently running over Standard. While not a great tool in a control metagame, this thing threatens to completely take over creature matchups.
R/B Aggro could have the tools to be the premier aggro deck in Standard. Combining artifacts with Forerunner and Weldfast Engineer to maximize the already unfair Unlicensed Disintegration positions you perfectly in Standard!
