When I hear the “Superfriends,” my brain immediately goes to Esper or Jeskai and a deck centered around the planeswalker Jace. Unfortunately, when Jace swore his oath to the Gatewatch, the card that came out of it was none too exciting. But the Abzan Superfriends have some serious potential.

Oath of Nissa adds consistency to almost any deck that can cast it. This means having enough green mana that it will never be stuck in your hand, and enough spells and lands that it will almost never miss. The “flavor text” of helping you actually cast your planeswalkers is rarely relevant, but it does mean you can play more green mana in your deck and struggle less in casting planeswalkers with WW or WB in their mana cost.

Oath of Gideon operates nearly opposite of Oath of Nissa in that the planeswalker clause is most exciting. A pair of Soldiers is decent, but not worth the 3-mana investment. Adding a loyalty counter to one of your many planeswalkers is unique, though. Being able to ultimate a Gideon, Ally of Zendikar, or having your Sorin, Solemn Visitor tick right up into ultimate range puts on so much pressure, and you get a couple Soldier tokens to help defend your Friends.

If you’re going to play Superfriends, you need some powerful planeswalkers.

Gideon, Ally of Zendikar and Sorin, Solemn Visitor are the headliners. They do great work together and with tokens, such as those from Oath of Gideon. By creating their own tokens and helping to pump the small creatures in play, the synergy is outstanding.

Nissa, Voice of Zendikar continues down the exact same theme of providing bodies and pumping them. Ob Nixilis, Reignited doesn’t contribute to flooding the board and pumping your team, but he’s just a solid planeswalker that can kill 2 creatures over two turns with an Oath of Gideon in play.

With all of these tokens, Secure the Wastes becomes an easy inclusion and a tough card to beat. Wingmate Roc is another great one with expendable tokens, and in any deck with Gideon. And finally, you have Drana, Liberator of Malakir—an awesome card that can make any token army lethal in a hurry!
