Hi, everyone! Here’s another edition of Pack 1 Pick 2 for Dragons of Tarkir Limited. I wanted to say thanks for all the positive feedback so far on the Pack 1 Pick 2, and I’m really glad you’re all enjoying it. Let’s get to the packs!
First Pick: Flatten
The only black card in the pack is Kolaghan Skirmisher, which is certainly a decent and playable card, but not nearly as good as Twin Bolt. As I’ve mentioned in past editions of this series, I believe black/red to be the best color combination in the format, so I’m not unhappy to second-pick a very good red card after first-picking a very good black card. In this instance though, if Twin Bolt were a powerful card of any color, be it something like Pacifism or Epic Confrontation, I’d still gladly select either card because it would still be so much better than any other card in the pack.
First Pick: Den Protector
Atarka Beastbreaker is a good card, maybe even the second-best green common. Draconic Roar, however, is one of the best uncommons, and a much more powerful card. Although your first-pick Den Protector is green, I think Draconic Roar interacts so positively with it as a cheap, efficient removal spell, that it makes this pick even easier. Red/green is a pretty good color comibation, which makes the pick even easier. So, in this instance, I really wouldn’t worry at all about staying on color, take the Draconic Roar, and try to play red/green.
First Pick: Ukud Cobra
The Gravecaller is probably best card in the pack, and it’s also the same color of your first pick. There isn’t really much else to consider. The next best card is probably Tail Slash, and it is worth noting that Tail Slash interacts very positively with Ukud Cobra, due to having deathtouch and being able to kill a creature of any size. But this isn’t close to a big enough upside to take it over a card that is both better and in your color.
First Pick: Tail Slash
Epic Confrontation, Pacifism, and Silumgar Sorcerer are all very good cards. Depending on your first pick you could have really gone in any direction in this pack. Of white, blue, and green, green is the best of those colors to pair with red. In addition, the fact that Epic Confrontation and Tail Slash are fairy synergistic, because both encourage you to play a creature-heavy deck, should make your future decisions easier. Epic Confrontation is the clear pick here, in my opinion, for all of these reasons.
First Pick: Necromaster Dragon
Necromaster Dragon is truly great, so you are heavily incentivized to stay in blue and black. Ukud Cobra is very good at holding down the ground when you’re trying to win by controlling the game in a blue/black deck, and likely win with fliers. It fits well into the strategy of the deck you’re trying to draft, and although there are several very good cards in this pack, the Cobra is the clear choice.
Thanks, as always, for checking out this edition of Pack 1 Pick 2. Let me know what you think of my picks in the comments, and let me know if you think there’s anything that I overlooked. I’ll be back soon with another edition of Pack 1, Pick 2, so check back soon!
