Say Goodbye to Grand Prix Byes

Today’s Magic esports update provided information on tiebreakers for the 2020 season and announced the end date for Grand Prix byes.

Tiebreakers

A series of different tiebreakers were announced to clarify how the 2019 season results will factor into the 2020 competitive play ecosystem. The tiebreakers for different areas, in order of importance, will follow.

2020 Rivals League

  1. 2019 Mythic Championship final day appearances
  2. 2019 Mythic Championship Saturday appearances
  3.  Most points earned during tabletop Mythic Championship Swiss Rounds (for tabletop slots); Most match wins at Arena Mythic Championships (for Arena slots)

2020 Magic Pro League

  1. Number of Mythic Championship final day apperances
  2. Highest finish at a Mythic Championship
  3. 2nd highest, 3rd highest, (and so on) until the tie is broken

2019 Magic World Championship

  1. Player with the greatest number of Mythic Championship final day appearances
  2. Highest final day finish at a Mythic Championship
  3. Greatest number of Day Two finishes at a Mythic Championship
  4. Highest match-win % on non-final day at 2019 Mythic Championships

Tiebreakers for the 2020-21 season will be made public after Mythic Championship VII.

Players Tour Invites

The following parties will be invited to the first Players Tour in 2020:

  • Players with 33 or more match points from both Mythic Championship IV (Barcelona) and Mythic Championship VI (Richmond)
  • Platinum, Gold, and Silver Pros from the Core Set 2020 and Eldraine Cycles
  • Magic Hall of Fame Members
  • Top 8 competitors from both Mythic Championship IV (Barcelona) and Mythic Championship VI (Richmond) will be invited to the first Players Tour Finals in 2020.

Arena and MPL Weekly

With the addition of the Rivals League, MPL Weekly – a twitch.tv broadcast that recapped the MPL Split matches – will not air for the 2020 Partial Season (January-July). More information on this will come in 2021.

Similarly, more information on Mythic Qualifiers and Mythic Points Challenges will be coming in 2021. However, the first Mythic Qualifier will take place January 11-12, 2020.

Grand Prix Byes

Grand Prix byes will be phased out on May 25, 2020. Byes, wherein players could earn free wins at the start of their tournament, were cited as originating in an era where the events were much smaller. The article describes fractional invites as filling a similar role, and states that removing byes allows for the exploration of other tournament structures.
