The first whirlwind week of MagicFest Online is in the books. The tournament series, created to provide Magic players around the world with an opportunity to qualify for the Players Tour in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. With social distancing the name of the game for many around the world, it is far safer to play games on MTG Arena than in a convention hall, and players could earn a slot in the Weekly Championship by going 5-1 or 6-0 in one of the qualifiers run throughout the week.
The Top 8 of the first Weekly Championship featured some familiar names including Ivan Floch and Mark Jacobson. In the end it was Jacobson, piloting Sultai Escape, who took down the tournament by defeating Ainol Alcaraz on Rakdos Sacrifice. Sultai Escape was one of the break out decks from the Week One qualifiers, blending a ramp strategy with a dominating endgame featuring both Polukranos, Unchained and Uro, Titan of Nature’s Wrath.
