It feels so good to look through the 5-0 decks on Magic Online Competitive Leagues and see something different.
Energy is a powerful mechanic that is pushed to see competitive Constructed play. The fact that there are so many solid cards for aggressive decks and combo decks makes energy a deck builder’s paradise. We haven’t really seen energy used in a midrange shell, however. Enter Pro Tour Champion Shaun McLaren.
You’re still going to use some aggressive creatures that can excel in midrange strategies. Servant of the Conduit is perfect as a reasonably-sized bear that can accelerate your mana, adding energy to use for mana or to stockpile for damage later.
Longtusk Cub is one of the best enablers to stockpile energy while also being one of the best energy sinks. Along these same lines is Bristling Hydra. It’s a more expensive card, but one that is problematic to deal with. If an opponent has to use a removal spell just to get you to spend your energy, you’re looking at a 5-power creature for 4 that countered a spell. It’s not easy to attack through and really challenging to block if you have a reserve.
What’s nice about this deck is that it’s fantastic at stockpiling this energy. Servant, Cub, and Hydra all threaten to use energy, but none of them need to right away. Unlike aggressive cards like Voltaic Brawler, just letting the energy sit there as an instant speed threat works perfectly. This plan fits perfectly with Whirler Virtuoso. Not only will the Whirler add a good amount of energy to your reserve, but it can create an entire army at instant speed. Throw in evasion and you have a real threat.
Harnessed Lightning is a great removal spell even in decks that don’t produce energy. It’s incredible here.
Main-deck Confiscation Coup is really awesome. If you’re looking for a midrange trump card that will provide you some tempo, try stealing your opponent’s best creature. That Archangel Avacyn or Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet will look much better on your side of the board, anyway (and you can even activate off colored abilities using Servant or Aether Hub).
With some burn to go over the top in Incendiary Flow, you just need a couple more game-breakers. Jace, Unraveler of Secrets is a great card that hasn’t gotten nearly the play that it deserves. With cards like Spell Queller being prominent in Standard, Jace as a 5-mana trump may be important.
Speaking of cards that can’t be Quellered, how about Skysovereign, Consul Flagship? This thing will take over in any creature battle and can even brawl with planeswalkers!
Temur Energy is filled with powerful cards that synergize really well together. We’ve only begun to explore what this powerful Kaladesh mechanic can do!
